The readings from this module brought many interesting perspectives on digital literacy in the classroom. One point I thought was interesting was when teaching digital literacies how do we assess what students learn. In the article Assessing News Literacy in the 21st Century by Linda Jacobson what should be learned in digital literacy classes like how to determine if a news source is accurate or if its “fake” news is discussed. Further in the article it brings up the problem of assessing media literacy because it is new and ever changing. So how do we know if how we are teaching media literacy is working? (Jacobson 2017)
The article I found the most interesting and relevant to my classroom was Customized Tech by Mike Bowden. In the article it says that students using educational app tend to have an advantage over ones who do not. But finding apps that you can use in the classroom can be difficult. The article gives the example that it is hard to find apps that line up with the curriculum or what is being covered in the classroom. (Bowden 2017) Another hurdle that I have come across is finding school approved websites. Many websites that we may use for our own personal use or that we may think are okay may not be Ed Law 2D compliant and that is something I try to be very cautious about.
Teaching Special Education Kindergarten and First grade I do not assign projects with the internet. When we are working using our curriculum website, I do make sure the students know they cannot go on any other websites because they may not be safe.
